A Short History of Baxter Hart & Abraham Ltd.

Baxter Hart & Abraham Ltd was incorporated in 1956 with the merger of Baxter Hart & George Carruthers Ltd and H. Abraham (Dyers) Ltd. It was formed as a millinery dyeing company; specifically dyeing gros-grain petersham ribbons and straws that are used in the manufacture of hats.

The company is run by the Horn family, who have been in the hat trade since the early 1800's. Since 1978 the dyeing was transferred to our affiliate company Barford Bros. Ltd. Baxter Hart then concentrated on being Petersham ribbon and wool felt merchants to the hat trade.

With over 200 colours in Petersham ribbon Baxter Hart became the premier ribbon supplier to the hat trade in the United Kingdom, a claim that the company is able to make to this day.

The hat trade in the nineties and the noughties came under severe competition from imported hats. Several large manufacturers went out of business. Baxter Hart's decided to help the model milliner and designers by expanding the availability of stock items
